Worktops & Materials

What is the main difference between Prime Oak and Standard Oak?

Standard and Prime Oak do not differentiate on a quality, durability and longevity basis but only on the aesthetic side. Prime oak has a flawless surface with almost no natural features like knots and grains. There is also a higher color consistency making it a flawless surface and suitable for contemporary and modern kitchens. Standard Oak, on the other hand, presents a perfect balance between natural features and flawless pieces. It has more knots and a more prominent grain pattern than the Prime Oak, making it suitable for both traditional and modern looking kitchens. Both types of Oak do not differ in their quality but only in their appearance.

What are the main differences between the different timber types?

The grain pattern and the colour are the two main characteristics that distinguish different worktops from each other. For example, Beech and Ash worktops have very similar in colour, however the grain pattern is what makes them different. Ash is known to have open wood grain markings, similar to Oak, while at the same time Beech has a more warm-toned uniform grain pattern.

Where do you source your wood from?

House of Worktops always to uses A-Grade timber in its production, therefore all the timber is sourced from the highest quality forests spanning from the Balkan Mountains to the Black Sea coast.

What material would you recommend if I am on a budget?

House of Worktops tries to provide high quality worktops at prices that would fit the budget of almost all the clients.

In terms of budget our Beech worktops are very attractively priced and thanks to their warm-grain pattern and beautiful colour they can be a charming and beautiful addition to all kitchens.

Are the materials permanent or can I expect some colour / shape change?

All the materials will provide eternal service, if they are well-maintained, while their colour and grain, just like the red wine is getting more attractive with age.

After-sales

How do I clean wood worktops?

To clean wood worktops, simply wipe the surface with warm (not boiling hot) soapy water. Remember to wipe off any water after a few minutes.

Oiling Process

What should I do once my worktop is delivered, what are the most important pre-installation steps?

Initially it is important to choose the “A” side of the worktop which is the side with a more uniform colour consistence and less natural imperfections. Of course, it is dependent on your own personal taste. Secondly, if you have not ordered a pre-oiled worktop, it is important to apply several coats of oil on the worktop on both sides before the installation. If you have already ordered a pre-oiled worktop then your worktop is ready to be installed right away!

What Oil should I use?

Oiling is the most important step in ensuring the longevity and preserving the natural beauty of your worktop. We highly recommend using Osmo Top Oil as it is the highest quality oil for wood worktops. It provides a hardwearing surface, ensures water resistance and requires less maintenance. Osmo Oil also provides resistance towards the most common foods and drink spillages in the kitchen. Three coats of Osmo Oil would be enough to give sufficient protection. For further information about Osmo Oil and the other wood worktop oil types check out our blog on comprehensive comparison of wood worktop oils.

Should I further oil my worktop if I buy a pre-oiled one?

Yes! The pre-oiling is only sufficient for the pre-installation stage. In order to ensure the longevity of the worktop we highly recommend further oiling the worktop with Osmo Oil after it has been installed.

How to apply the oil?

Before applying your oil make sure to go over the worktop gently with a 120-grit orbital sander, ensuring the edges are covered with a sanding pad. After the sanding wipe down the surface and using a brush gently apply a thin coat of oil all over the worktop surface. Let it dry for 10-12 hours and repeat 2-3 times using Osmo Top Oil.

When should I re-oil my worktop?

In order to check if your worktop needs re-oiling performing the Water Drop Test is sufficient. Just spill a drop of water on the surface. If the water drop forms a bead, the worktop has sufficient oil protection. If the drop sits flat re-oiling is necessary.

How many coats of oil should I be applying?

The coat layers can vary from oil type to oil type. For example, Osmo Oil requires around 3 coats to provide enough protection and accent the beauty of the worktop. Whereas Dnaihs Oil requires 8-9 coats to build a protective barrier. For further information about Osmo Oil and the other wood worktop oil types check out our blog on comprehensive comparison of wood worktop oils.

How long is the drying time?

The drying time is highly dependent on the oil type. For instance, Osmo Top Oil takes between 6-8 hours to dry. For further information about Osmo Oil and the other wood worktop oil types check out our blog on comprehensive comparison of wood worktop oils.
