Finishing and Oiling

1. The water test

If you do not know when your kitchen worktop needs reoiling, you can simply spill a little bit of water on the surface. If the water drip forms a bead, the worktop is fine, but if the water sits flat, it is time to reoil your worktop.

2. Sand it, before you oil it

Sanding is an essential procedure prior to reoiling. The great thing is that you can sand down any scratches or stains that you have on your wood worktop and restore it to its original glory. Start with a light sanding paper, you can build up from 100grit to 150grit, but no finer.

3. Time to apply the oil

danish oil

We recommend using Rustin’s Danish Oil. You can find all you need within the Maintenance Kit we have put together for you. Shake the Danish oil before use. Pour liberally onto the wood worktop and then spread it over evenly with a clean lint free cloth or with a brush. Always remember to rub or brush in the direction of the grains.

4. Let it dry

The first coating will only take a few hours to dry, as the wood will quickly take all the oil in. Thereafter, the subsequent coatings will need between 6-8 hours of drying time. Instead of trying to form one thick layer, it is always better to have multiple thin coatings. It is very important to cover the kitchen worktop with minimum of 4-5 coats in order to form a protective barrier that will provide the water and physical resistance that you will need your kitchen worktop to have. And do not worry – you can’t over-oil your wooden worktop.

5. Is your worktop ready to go? Test it!

Put your worktop to the water test (Step 1) once again and if needed, repeat the oiling process.

It is advisable to consider re-oiling you worktop every 3-4 months depending on how much “action” is taking place in your kitchen. The busier you are, the quicker your oil wears down and the more you have to look after your kitchen worktop. We believe regular reoiling is a small price to pay for the beauty that the natural wood will bring into your home.
