How to Measure a Radius Corner Easily?
Last Updated on September 13, 2024
One of the most asked questions when ordering kitchen worktops is “How can I measure a radius corner?” Well, the good news is, measuring a radius corner is much easier than you may realise.
What is a radius corner?
A radius corner – also known as a curved corner – is a round cut routed at one of the four corners of a worktop. Now let us imagine that a circle is touching the left side and the face side of the worktop simultaneously – these intersection points are known as tangents in mathematics. The centre of the circle is at the point of intersection of the imaginary perpendicular lines from the circle tangents. In other words, the distance from the centre of the circle to the tangent points is the radius of the circle.
As we have learned from mathematics, the distance between the left tangent and the corner of the worktop is equal in length to the distance between the tangent on the face side and the corner of the worktop (see Fig. 1). Besides, a tangent and a radius of a corner always meet at 90 degrees, however, the corner of the worktop is also 90 degrees, as it is rectangular. Therefore, the left line from the corner of the worktop to the tangent is parallel to the radius, which intersects the tangent on the face side of the worktop and the two lengths of the two radiuses are equal. Therefore, the shape between the corner of the worktop and the tangent lines is square with equal sides.
How do I measure a radius corner of a worktop?
Well, you need a ruler and an item with an even surface (i.e., ruler, book, baton, chopping board or even a smartphone), simple as that. Then follow these simple steps:
- Place the item with a straight surface along the edge of the worktop, where you would like to measure the radius corner, make sure that it fits well and that there are no gaps (see Fig. 3).
- Place the ruler on the near side of the worktop of the radius corner and make sure that there are no gaps.
- The radius corner of your worktop is the distance from the tangent line i.e., where the curved cut of the worktop starts, to the point where your ruler meets your straight edge.
- For easier measurements, please make sure that your ruler meets the other item at point zero.
- Your radius corner is the distance from point zero to the tangent (where the curved cut of the worktop starts).
- Measuring a radius corner has never been easier!
Overhang Aspect
If your worktop is going to be placed above a curved cabinet, please consider a worktop overhang when making your final calculations.
For example, if you have purchased a 3m oak worktop, where there is a curved cabinet on its right corner with a radius of 300mm and you would like to have a 20mm overhang above the cabinets. Simply add your overhang of 20mm to the radius of your cabinets 300mm and then your worktop will need to have a radius corner of 320mm (300mm + 20mm).
House of Worktops provides all types of customisation services, where your worktop will be professionally fabricated to be ready to fit.
