How to pick your new kitchen worktop
Last Updated on February 2, 2023
Everyone wants their home to look good and be somewhere they can be proud of. But how does that translate in the kitchen? As well as being aesthetically pleasing, you need to ensure that it is also a practical space for however you choose to use it.
When considering the worktop options for your kitchen, there are several aspects you need to think about, to make it the right choice for you and your home. Will it stand up to the rigours of family life? Is it going to be used for working as well as cooking? Is it long-lasting? Environmentally-friendly?
Durability
If you are going to be splashing out on a new worktop for your kitchen, you will want it to last so that you don’t have to replace it again in a couple of years. While stone or marble is the most expensive choice, wooden surfaces such as solid oak worktops are an excellent alternative at a fraction of the price. You will need to maintain the wood with regular oiling in order to keep it in tip-top condition. But, if you look after it, it will look after you for many years ahead.
Scratches can also be sanded away fairly easily, as can any inadvertent scorch marks. We would never recommend putting hot pans directly on the surface. But, at least if you do, it is something that can be rectified without too much trouble.
Versatility
Nowadays, many of us use our kitchens for more than just preparing and cooking food. They are the hub of the home, an entertaining space, or even a makeshift office for home working. So, our worktops need to reflect that mixed use. Laminate worktops may be your best choice here, as they offer a completely smooth surface that can be wiped clean with minimal effort and can stand up to being used for homework, arts and crafts, and cooking while still being hygienically safe.
A kitchen island or breakfast bar is often the ideal solution for a multi-purpose space, so you may wish to choose a kitchen worktop that matches throughout, or one which is specifically aimed at being used for different scenarios.
Sustainability
All of our worktops are sourced and produced sustainably, with our wooden range coming direct from our own FSC certified forests in the Balkans. Our workshops also use eco-friendly materials, and run on eco-friendly power. Even our transport actively operates on a reduced carbon footprint. So, you can be sure that any worktop you buy from us will be as close to environmentally-friendly as a worktop can be.
Desirability
When picking a new kitchen worktop, you need to make sure it complements the rest of your kitchen. If you are keeping existing cabinets, will the countertop you choose set off both to their best advantage? Are you going to be painting your cabinets or walls? Will you be introducing new tiled splashbacks? Whatever you want to achieve in your kitchen design, we will have a worktop to suit your aesthetic needs and can offer you professional advice that has been built up over many years of experience in the industry.
