What Is a U-Shaped Kitchen Design?
Last Updated on June 20, 2023
When you think about a U-shaped kitchen, it is generally considered to be a kitchen in which the cupboards form a horseshoe formation, so that the walls on three sides of the room are covered. A distance of at least 1.5m should be implemented between the two long sides to avoid it feeling cramped.
A u kitchen is a particularly practical way of having a kitchen layout, as it means you can reach most areas of the work surfaces without having to move very far, and preparing and cooking meals is much easier.
There is a supposed golden triangle of kitchen positioning, which aims for the sink, oven and fridge to be within easy reach of each other, for maximum efficiency. A u kitchen often achieves that aim without even trying.
One of the main beauties of a u kitchen is that it can work in any size or style of kitchen, whether it is big or small, includes a dining area, or is part of a fully open plan design.
Worktops
A u kitchen will automatically have more worktop space than a galley kitchen or other design in the same space, as three sides will be taken up with usable surfaces.
Choosing a light-coloured material, such as a beech, for your worktop, will allow the light to bounce off it at all angles, and makes your kitchen seem bigger and brighter. If you have a window at the head of the U, it will provide a focal point, as well as let in the most light to illuminate your work area.
Having this extra worktop space means that you can also designate areas of your kitchen for other purposes – perhaps a breakfast bar, or an area for working from home or for the kids to do their homework. A u kitchen makes for a very versatile space, however you plan to use it.
Storage
Another highly practical reason for having a u kitchen, is the extra storage space it can provide. Additional cabinets, both low-level with drawers, and fixed above the worktops, allow for all your pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils to be hidden away – but still easily accessible.
This means your kitchen can be kept neat and tidy and you aren’t scrabbling around to find anything. It will also help with hygiene levels, and cleaning is a doddle too.
If you find that your low-level cupboards provide you with enough storage, then keep the space light and airy by not installing any upper-range cupboards.
Seating
A u kitchen lends itself to the open end being left free for a dining table and chairs, keeping a smart separation between the two, but still enabling them to be in the same room. Or, this could be a social space, with a sofa and maybe a TV, so that the family can all be together, or ideal for entertaining.
Final thoughts
Choosing a u kitchen is both fashionable and stylish as well as being highly practical and versatile. It may involve more planning in the design stage, to get everything right and where you want it to be. But the benefits are endless and will ensure your kitchen can be enjoyed for years to come.
