What is the difference between solid surface and compact laminate?

They are both quartz alternatives but they solve different problems. Here are the key differences:

Stain, scratch and heat resistance: compact laminate wins here. It is denser and more resistant in day-to-day use.

Repairability: solid surface wins here. The pattern runs through the entire thickness, so if it gets scratched or stained, you can sand it back and it looks brand new. Compact laminate cannot be repaired on the surface.

Thickness: compact laminate is 12mm slim and modern. Solid surface is 20mm, matching standard quartz.

Price: solid surface is approximately two times the cost of compact laminate. Due to limited sizes, material waste can sometimes make it as expensive as genuine quartz.

The choice comes down to your kitchen. Busy family kitchen with lots of cooking? Compact laminate. Want the quartz look with peace of mind on repairs? Solid surface.

Chipboard laminate is the traditional laminate worktop that has been part of kitchens since the 1930s. It has a core made of compressed wood particles with a decorative High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) surface on top.

It is the most affordable way to get a fresh-looking kitchen. The surface itself is durable and heat-resistant, and we stock a range of patterns including marble-effect, wood-effect, and stone-effect designs.

Standard thickness is 38mm or 28mm. We stock them in 3 metre and 4.1 metre lengths.

It is important to understand that while the surface is waterproof, the chipboard core is not. Water getting into joints or edges can cause swelling. For this reason, chipboard laminate is for indoor kitchens only and joints must be properly sealed.

No. Undermount sinks and drainage grooves are not possible with chipboard laminate.

Undermount sinks would expose the raw chipboard core to water at the sink edge, which would cause the material to swell and fail. Drainage grooves would cut through the decorative surface and expose the moisture-sensitive core.

With chipboard laminate, you must use an overmount sink where the lip sits on top of the laminate and is sealed with silicone to protect the core from water.

If you want an undermount sink or drainage grooves, compact laminate or solid surface are the right options. Compact laminate delivers a similar look at a very competitive price point.

No. Chipboard laminate is exclusively for indoor kitchen use. It cannot be used in bathrooms, outdoor kitchens, or any high-moisture environment.

The core is made of compressed wood particles, which means direct water contact or high humidity will cause structural failure. The material will swell, warp, and delaminate.

For bathrooms, we recommend compact laminate. It is 100% waterproof, zero maintenance, and looks clean and modern. We stock bathroom-specific sizes in most of our compact laminate range.

They share the word "laminate" in their name, but they are completely different products.

Standard laminate (chipboard laminate) has a core made of compressed wood particles with a thin decorative surface on top. It is 38mm thick, affordable, and widely used. However, the core is not waterproof, so you cannot have undermount sinks, drainage grooves, or use it in wet environments.

Compact laminate has no wood in the core at all. It is made from layers of kraft paper compressed under extreme heat and pressure with resin. The result is a 12mm slab that is 100% solid, 100% waterproof, and stone-like in density. You can have undermount sinks, drainage grooves, and use it outdoors or in bathrooms.

Standard laminate is the budget option for a quick kitchen refresh. Compact laminate is the premium option that competes with quartz at a fraction of the cost.
