Walnut worktop is twice as expensive as beech, whereas oak worktop is up to 30-40% more expensive, however, we are confident enough to say that beech has comparable strength and beauty characteristics to oak and walnut.
In this discussion today we will talk about the reasons why beech worktops are sold at a cheaper price. Before we start our discussions, we would like to give you general information regarding beech tree.
Brief description of beech worktops
Beech, species name Fagus Sylvatica, is commonly found in the woodlands of Europe. It can be found along challenging mountain slopes which might explain its high strength, stability, and endurance. Its sturdy and durable qualities make it one of the most coveted worktops and make it stand in line with top solid wood worktops.
Beech has a very delicate colour pattern and that is one of the reasons why it is one of our favourites. It has a characteristic light golden hue and a freckled grain pattern that sets it apart from the others and gives it a striking look. Its beautiful and eye-catching shades match well with all styles of kitchen, be it a modern, vintage, contemporary or modern style kitchen. Its unusual features make it the most loved worktop of all.
Beech worktops, in contrast to walnut and oak worktops, have a uniform grain pattern with slight freckles, tiny knots, and more radial and longer wave patterns that transcend the size of the stave. Each stave represents a fragment of the pattern of the timber, this adds to the beauty of the timber and makes it even more special.
Why is Beech cheaper in comparison with other hardwood species such as ash, walnut, iroko and oak kitchen worktops?
Just because beech is affordable does not mean that this wood type is of inferior quality compared to other cheap kitchen worktops. There are two main reasons for its relatively affordable price; First of all, this tree variety is the most commonly seen hardwood type in Europe, approx. 10% of all forests are inhabited by beech. Since beech timber is not rare it is relatively easy to access, furthermore, its high abundance coupled with its ease of accessibility is one of the reasons for its lower price.
Secondly, the production facilities of House of Worktops are located right next to the largest beech forests in its geographical region, this means cheaper transportation as we do not have to spend a lot of our resources on the transportation of raw materials. Also, the fact that beech timber has a sawmill-friendly shape, meaning that with less timber we can produce more worktops. This is another reason why our beech worktop is sold at a cheaper price compared to other wood worktops.
